Democratic Candidates

Joseph BidenJoseph Biden Jr., U.S. Senator, Delaware
Sen. Biden announced on Jan. 31, 2007, that he is running for the Democratic nomination for president. He has been a member of the Senate for 35 years, first elected in 1972 when he was 29. Biden is currently the chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. He ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 1988. Biden practiced law prior to running for the Senate. Hillary Rodham ClintonHillary Rodham Clinton, U.S. Senator, New York
Sen. Clinton announced on Jan. 20, 2007, that she was forming a 2008 exploratory committee for the Democratic nomination for president. She is entering her second term in the Senate, having just been re-elected to the seat she first won in 2000. She was first lady of the United States (1993-2001) and first lady of Arkansas (1979-1981) and again from 1983 to 1993, a period in which she also practiced law. Christopher DoddChristopher Dodd, U.S. Senator, Connecticut
Sen. Dodd announced on Jan. 11, 2007, that he is running for the Democratic nomination for president. He has been a member of the Senate for 26 years, having first been elected in 1981. Dodd was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1975 to 1980. He is chair of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee and serves on the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Dodd is a U.S. Army veteran and was a Peace Corps volunteer. John EdwardsJohn Edwards, former U.S. Senator, North Carolina
Former Sen. Edwards announced on Dec. 28, 2006, that he is running for the Democratic nomination for president. Edwards served in the Senate for one term, having been elected in 1998. He ran as John Kerry’s vice-presidential running mate in 2004. While in the Senate, Edwards served on the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. After the 2004 campaign, Edwards founded the Center on Poverty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to entering public service, Edwards was a trial lawyer. Dennis KucinichDennis Kucinich, U.S. Representative, Ohio
Rep. Kucinich announced on Dec.19, 2006, that he is running for the Democratic nomination for president. He has been a member of the House of Representatives for 10 years, having been first elected in 1996. Kucinich also served in the Ohio Senate, on the Cleveland City Council and was mayor of Cleveland (1977-1979). Barack ObamaBarack Obama, U.S. Senator, Illinois
Sen. Obama announced on Feb. 10, 2007, that he is running for the Democratic nomination for president. He is in his first term in the Senate, having been elected in 2004. Prior to running for the U.S. Senate, Obama was a member of the Illinois Senate for seven years. He currently serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Bill RichardsonBill Richardson, Governor, New Mexico
Gov. Richardson announced on Jan. 22, 2007, that he is running for the Democratic nomination for president. He was recently elected to his second term as governor of New Mexico, having first been elected in 2003. Richardson served as secretary of energy and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in the Clinton administration. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1997. Sam BrownbackSam Brownback, U.S. Senator, Kansas
Sen. Brownback announced on Jan. 20, 2007, that he is running for the Republican nomination for president. He has been a member of the Senate for 10 years having been re-elected in 2002. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 10 years. Brownback currently serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee and is ranking member on the Joint Economic Committee. Rudolph GiulianiRudolph Giuliani, former Mayor, New York City
Former Mayor Giuliani announced on Feb. 5, 2007, that he has filed papers with the Federal Election Commission to run for the Republican nomination for president. He was mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001. Prior to being elected mayor, Giuliani served as U.S. attorney for the southern district of New York and associate U.S. attorney general. Mike HuckabeeMike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas
Former Gov. Huckabee announced on Jan. 28, 2007, that he is forming an exploratory committee for the Republican nomination for president. He served as governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007. Huckabee was lieutenant governor from 1993 until he became governor in 1996. He is an ordained minister and in that role served as president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. Duncan HunterDuncan Hunter, U.S. Representative, California
Rep. Hunter announced on Jan. 25, 2007, that he is running for the Republican nomination for president. He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1982. Sen. McCain announced on April 25, 2007, that he is running for the Republican nomination for president. He was elected to the Senate in 1986 and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1987. McCain is the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.
