City audit finds underreporting of school violence
City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. released an audit on Sept. 19 that found that many safety incidents in New York City public schools are not being reported. Under state law, school administrators are required to report all violent and disruptive incidents on school grounds, but auditors determined that many incidents were not properly entered into the city's online reporting system. For the 10 large high schools audited, 21 percent of the sampled incidents were not reported, including 14 percent of those incidents deemed serious. Click here for full report.
Discipline Code & Reporting Incidents
All schools are required to apply the Discipline Code of the DOE. It is a good idea that you familarize yourself with this Code as it will help you when reporting incidents. For a copy of the DOE Discipline Code 2008, click here.
It’s essential that schools report all infractions—from the most minor to the most serious. We, as a system, cannot afford to tolerate schools’ failure to report incidents. Many times your principal asks "Where does it say I have to do that?" When it comes to safety we have produced an easy crib sheet to help you and teach your administration. Click here.
